Gold (XAU) Funding Rate
Gold perps trade gold exposure on crypto venues, so their funding depends on market hours, contract design and where the venue lists them.

Statistics use one value per venue (the median if a venue lists several contracts), skip closed markets, GMX (pool-skew funding with a separate borrowing fee) and LeverUp markets routed to Hyperliquid (they would double count Hyperliquid). Every row is still shown in the table below.

Every XAU market in the latest snapshot, highest 8h rate first. Rate per interval is the amount paid at each settlement; 1h, 8h and APR are normalised so venues with different intervals compare directly. See the Hyperliquid funding rates page for core and HIP-3 markets.

What does Gold (XAU) funding cost?
Worked example for a $10,000 long held for 1 day and 7 days, using each rate from the table above as if it stayed constant (it will not). Funding is charged on notional, not margin.
| Scenario | 8h rate | 1 day | 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Median (9 venues) | 0.0063% | $1.88 paid | $13.17 paid |
| Highest: dYdX | 0.1219% | $36.56 paid | $255.89 paid |
| Lowest: Lighter | -0.0124% | $3.72 received | $26.04 received |
Cross-venue spread idea
In principle a trader could go long where funding is lowest (Lighter) and short where it is highest (dYdX) and collect the difference. At the current rates, $10,000 on each side would be a net $40.28 received per day before costs.
Caveat: this is an illustration, not advice. Real results depend on trading fees, price basis between the two contracts, different settlement intervals (a rate can change before you are paid), margin on both venues, liquidation risk on either leg, and funding changing sign. The funding rate arbitrage scanner ranks these gaps across every asset and explains the risks.
Try your own size and hold time in the funding rate calculator with XAU preselected. To estimate liquidation price and margin for the same position, use the Crypto Leverage Calculator.

What drives Gold (XAU) funding rates
Gold perpetuals are real-world-asset (RWA) contracts: they let traders take leveraged long or short exposure to the gold price using crypto margin. Unlike a coin, the underlying market closes. Spot gold trades around the clock on weekdays but pauses from Friday evening to Sunday evening UTC, and index-linked perps follow that schedule. Our tables label rows as closed during that window, and the summary uses the last known rates.
Contracts come in two main designs. Index-linked perps, such as the Hyperliquid HIP-3 gold market and the XAU contracts on centralised exchanges, track an off-chain gold price. Tokenised-gold perps, based on PAXG or XAUT, track a gold-backed token that trades continuously, so they can keep trading and moving when the traditional market is shut. Because some venues list both, a venue can appear with more than one row, and the summary takes that venue's median.
HIP-3 is Hyperliquid's framework for builder-deployed markets; the gold market there is run by a third-party deployer, with the same hourly funding mechanism as core Hyperliquid perps. Wallet-based front ends that route gold to HIP-3 inherit that funding exactly: the difference is access and leverage, not the funding rate.
What moves gold funding? Funding follows the perp's premium to its index. Safe-haven demand in risk-off episodes, interest-rate expectations and the US dollar all affect gold's price and the leverage traders take on it. Many gold perps sit near the venue's baseline interest component in quiet markets, and bigger deviations often follow macro headlines or weekend gaps when the reference market reopens.
Compared with coins, funding on gold is generally calmer, but contract-design differences matter more, so read the venue symbol column to see which contract each row is.
Where XAU is listed
Gold is listed on Hyperliquid (core PAXG and the HIP-3 xyz market), most centralised exchanges (XAU and tokenised-gold contracts), dYdX, Aster, Lighter, edgeX and GMX, plus wallet-based venues that route to Hyperliquid.
LeverUp also lists XAU: its XAU market is routed to Hyperliquid, so its funding equals Hyperliquid's; the difference is wallet-based access and leverage, not the funding rate. Trade XAU on LeverUp.
What to watch
What to watch: the market-open column, since closed rows show last-known rates; the weekend reopening, when gaps can move funding; and which contract each venue symbol represents. Do not mix tokenised-gold and index-linked contracts when judging spreads.
Gold (XAU) funding rate FAQ
What is the current XAU funding rate?
At 2026-10-20T09:20:53.973Z UTC the median XAU funding rate across 9 venues is 0.0063% per 8 hours (6.8678% APR), ranging from -0.0124% on Lighter to 0.1219% on dYdX. Positive means longs pay shorts.
Do gold perps have funding on weekends?
Tokenised-gold perps keep trading, but index-linked perps follow the traditional market, which is shut from Friday 21:00 to Sunday 22:00 UTC; rows are labelled accordingly.
What is the difference between XAU and PAXG perps?
XAU perps track a gold price index; PAXG and XAUT perps track a gold-backed token that trades 24/7, so funding and price can diverge slightly.
What is HIP-3 gold on Hyperliquid?
A builder-deployed Hyperliquid market for gold that settles funding hourly like core perps.
Why is gold funding often close to zero?
Gold's perp premium is usually small and many venues anchor funding to a small baseline interest component, so quiet markets sit near it.
